Family reunification (reagrupación familiar)

Family reunification allows a foreign national lawfully resident in Spain to bring their spouse or partner, their children and, in certain cases, their parents. It requires a prior period of residence, financial resources, adequate housing and health insurance. We prepare the application in Spain and guide your family through the visa process.

In brief

Who it is for
Foreign nationals resident in Spain who wish to bring relatives living abroad. Family members of Spanish nationals follow a different scheme.
Where to apply
The sponsor applies at the Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería) of their province; the relative then applies for a visa at the Spanish consulate.
Decision deadline
Two months; without a reply in that period, the application is deemed refused. The consulate decides on the visa within one month.
Fees
We quote them in the first consultation (€40), with the option to pay in instalments.

Requirements

  • Having lived in Spain for at least one year and having applied to reside for at least another year; it is granted once your renewal is approved.
  • To bring parents, you must be a long-term resident; they must be your dependants and, as a general rule, over 65.
  • Stable and regular resources: 150% of the IPREM index for two people and an extra 50% for each additional relative, with a possible reduction when reuniting minors.
  • Adequate housing, shown by a report from the regional government or the local council, no more than six months old.
  • Health insurance for you and the relatives joining you.
  • Having any dependent minor children already in Spain enrolled in school.
  • Paying the fee; for the visa, the relative will provide a passport, proof of relationship, criminal record certificates and a medical certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Which relatives can I bring?

Your spouse, or registered or stable partner (twelve months living together, unless you have children together); your or your partner's children under 18 or with a disability; minors you legally represent; dependent parents; and an adult child who will care for you if you have an officially recognised dependency.

Can my relatives work?

Yes. The authorisation held by a spouse, partner or children of working age allows them to work as employees or self-employed anywhere in Spain with no further formalities. Over time they can obtain residence independent of yours if they meet the requirements.

What deadlines apply after approval?

Your relative has two months from notification to apply for the visa, which the consulate must decide within one month. Once issued, they must enter Spain within one month at most and apply for the TIE within a month of arrival.
